PM2.5 exceedances and source appointment as inputs for an early warning system

Abstract: Between June 2018 and April 2019, a sampling campaign was carried out to collect PM2.5, monitoring meteorological parameters and anthropogenic events in the Sartenejas Valley, Venezuela. We develop a logistic model for PM2.5 exceedances (≥ 12.5 µg m−3). Source appointment was done using elemental composition and morphology of PM by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS). A proposal of an early warning system (EWS) for PM pollution episodes is presented. The logistic … Show more

“…The particle size of this type varied in the range of 1-5 μm. These particles are observed in cities with large vehicular traffic and are associated with exhaust emissions from automobiles using gasoline or diesel combustibles [18,19]. Particles in the form of filaments containing aluminosilicate particles enriched with oxides of titanium and other metals were also found (Fig.…”

“…The dependent variable for RLog is defined as the discretization of the exceedance of the concentration for PM i -24 h (EPM 1 -24 h or EPM 2.5 -24 h), setting a value equal to "1" when the concentration of PM i -24 h exceeds or equals 15 µg m −3 and a value of "0" if PM i -24 h is less than 15 µg m −3 . To discretize the values of PM i -24 h in binary values, the approach of Rincon et al (2022) was used. The concentration limit value of PM 2.5 -24 h\15 µg m −3 (WHO, 2021) was used as a reference for establishing a threshold for exceedances of PM 1 and PM 2.5 .…”
