Abstract: In memory of my father and grandfather who always wanted there to be a "doctor" in the family. I just wish they had been here to see it happen. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation would not have been possible without the help and generosity of a great number of individuals, institutions, and organizations. First and foremost, I am indebted to Margaret Beck and Matthew E. Hill for their belief and confidence in my success and their years of mentorship and encouragement. Their commentary and honest advice have… Show more

“…Less than 1% of the sherds recovered from the 1930s Smithsonian excavations (Wedel 1940, 1959) and the 1970s Kansas Historical Society excavations (Witty 1971, 1975, 1983) represent vessels manufactured in the northern Rio Grande (Beck and Trabert 2014; Beck et al 2016). Characteristic Dismal River ceramics and stone and bone tool forms dominate the archaeological collection from 14SC1 (Beck and Trabert 2014; Trabert 2014, 2015), suggesting that people who were probably ancestral Apache also occupied the site (Brunswig 1995; Champe 1949; Gunnerson 1987; Scheiber 2006; Wedel 1959).…”

“…Later excavators (e.g., Gunnerson 1987; Wedel 1959, Witty 1971, 1983) report minimal Puebloan artifacts and features compared with the abundance of Dismal River artifacts at the site (see Beck and Trabert 2014 for an overview of the site's excavation history). We have previously argued that Puebloan women, if not entire families, were incorporated into Dismal River communities at 14SC1 and nearby sites (Beck and Trabert 2014; Beck et al 2016; McGrath, Beck, and Hill 2017; Trabert 2014, 2015, 2017; Trabert, Hill, and Cooley 2017).
