PLUNC Proteins Positivity in Patients with Chronic Rhinosinusitis: A Case-Control Study

Abstract: Introduction. Innate immunity is the first protection against microorganisms. Nowadays, there is a growing interest in innate immune molecule known as palate, lung, nasal epithelial clone (PLUNC). PLUNC is a specific product of the airways, of approximately 25 kDa, encoded by adjacent genes found within a 300 kb region of chromosome 20; these proteins must be detected predominantly in the upper respiratory tract. Materials and Methods. We performed a case-control study to investigate the presence of this prote… Show more

“…Levels of SPLUNC1 are lower in subjects with seasonal allergic rhinitis, subjects exposed to cigarette smoke and in workers exposed to epoxy chemicals [137,[145][146]. Similar results are seen in subjects with chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps [147][148]. SPLUNC1 has also been shown to enhance recruitment of leukocytes and elevate phagocytic activity in the lungs of mice after exposure to carbon nano tubes, but in the same time reduce the subsequent chronic inflammation [149].…”

“…11 The data so far available about PLUNC reveal a multifunctional protein, which plays a novel role in airway defense at the air/liquid interface. Thus, PLUNC has been shown to be induced and upregulated during microbial infection 12 and its expression is also upregulated after neuronal injury. 13 In cases of cystic fibrosis, PLUNC is also upregulated.…”

“…These two proteins seem to be related from a structural point of view and they may have antagonistic ways of action 1,3 . LBP binds LPS and determines cellular host reactions to LPS, while BPI binds LPS, but it has a role of reducing cellular responses 4 . By this mechanism, a balance is maintained in the response to bacterial action.…”
