The construction industry impacts resource consumption and waste production and thus necessitates solutions that promote sustainable practices. In particular, it must address challenges surrounding data collection and digital management services that often hinder the recycling or reuse of materials. The purpose of this study is to develop an integrated platform-based digital tool that seamlessly incorporates circular economy principles into construction processes, with a particular focus on circular resource utilization in the building envelope components’ life cycle. This tool aims to address the challenges in the construction industry related to resource consumption, waste production, and sustainability by promoting sustainable practices and improving material management. This paper reports industrial joint research to develop an integrated platform-based digital tool that seamlessly incorporates circular economy principles into construction processes, focusing on circular resource utilization in the building envelope components life cycle. By combining different platforms and services from the previous research, this study’s results enhance and integrate comprehensive thinking approaches and services. These include promoting raw material substitution, reducing supply chain arrangement time, minimizing waste throughout the building component lifecycle, enhancing disassembly processes, and improving life cycle environmental assessments. The tool design was informed by user-driven narratives and requirements, and demo case testing procedures, ensuring usability and industry relevance. Furthermore, integration with product lifecycle management software and data management platforms enhanced data sharing and accuracy. This study highlights the potential of integrated tools to revolutionize supply chains and promote circular economy, transforming construction paradigms. They can contribute to the reshaping of material management towards environmental consciousness, fostering resource-efficient green building solutions, and enabling more circularity in the construction industry.

The circular business model (CBM) concepts are vast, interconnected, and emerging. Research to date has been somewhat fragmented, and there would be value in focusing on the systemic identification of the connectivity of the topics around CBM. Furthermore, the business model innovation (BMI) process and business model implementation were identified as two separate spectra of research that should be seen collectively and added to the literature. This article reviewed 256 articles (solely focusing on “CBM frameworks”) published between 2007 and mid-2022, collected from the Scopus database, and analyzed using the content analysis method to identify the research gap/s. Results showed that under circular business model innovation (CBMI), the innovation process and their associated process modeling, archetypes, tools, experimentation, digitalization, and innovation via the inclusion of circular economy (CE) principles and sustainability in BMI were highlighted. From the CBM adoption/implementation perspectives, business ecosystem, technological innovation, product lifecycle management, CBM value dimensions (e.g., value proposition, value creation, and delivery), organizational capabilities, and dynamics were investigated. Topics around sustainability and circularity principles, strategies and organizational performance, CBM value streams, digitalization, and product-service systems were topical issues of the circular supply chain (CSC). A conceptual framework for gaining circular competencies integrating all elemental issues throughout the CBM development process (e.g., innovation, adoption within CSC) has been progressed. Based on the review, this article defined a circular business model as a business model that fundamentally applies one or more of the principles of CE at various product/service/material lifecycle stages, for which sustainability-focused technological innovation, collaboration among business ecosystem partners, and enhanced dynamic capabilities of any organization are prerequisites. Several research gaps were identified with potential avenues for future research directions, which will be helpful for policymakers, business organizations, and researchers.

Literature Review by Scientometric Methods on the Impact of the Circular Economy on Sustainable Industrial Products

The circular economy (CE) is a contemporary concept that includes the use of renewable materials and technologies, making sustainability an important part of corporate management. The paper deals with issues related to the current state of learning and management of the application of circular economy concepts—CE. The main purpose of this work is to identify both the interest of industries in the CE field in terms of the principles of eco-design and eco-innovation of sustainable industrial products, as well as the approach and development of the concept during the pandemic period. The authors performed a scientometric analysis in the Web of Science (WOS) database for the CE field, having two search criteria: sustainability and eco-design. As a result, 66 publications from the last five years were retained. Given the higher number of publications in the last three years, CE was found to be a topical area. Out of the 66 publications, using the PRISMA diagram, the authors identified the eligible articles, excluding 15 of them as being only tangential to the CE field and not applied in the industry. Depending on the high frequency of certain keywords, the authors identified three important directions for the CE approach that corroborate and interpret the results obtained: M—management (1); P—packing (2); and L—Learning (3). Following this approach, the authors determined the focus of the manufacturing industries in terms of applying the concepts and principles of CE, thus being able to contribute to the creation of eco-innovation and eco-design practices of industrial products, especially industrial packaging. The paper will also be beneficial for Ph.D. students who show a certain interest in CE and will help develop the following research directions in this field.
