The Hoang Sa islands, located in the northern part of the East Vietnam Sea, lack information on geological structural boundaries. The gravity data from the global marine gravity model were analyzed using the enhanced total horizontal gradient methods to delineate geological structures that appear as lineaments on the transformed gravity anomaly maps of the area. Before applying the techniques to gravity data of the Hoang Sa islands, their effectiveness was demonstrated by comparing them with the results from the total horizontal gradient method for a synthetic model. Applying the enhanced horizontal gradient methods shows that most of the lineaments identified in the Hoang Sa islands are trending in the WSW-ENE, NE-SW, E-W, WNW-ESE and NNW-SSE directions. These results provide a better understanding of the subsurface structural features of the islands.

Studying the present strain rate is significant in determining the characteristics and origin of geological anomalies in the region. Tectonic strain occurs under the influence of various factors, especially tectonic forces, and only a few cases of deformation occur at speeds observable by humans. This research uses velocity data from GNSS measurements in Quang Nam - Quang Ngai and surrounding regions to assess present tectonic strain. The combination of methods used in this study includes calculating the ITRF Earth-fixed frame to minimize errors, the method of relative velocity calculation to compare the speed variations between station positions, and the deformation calculation method using the QOCA software developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The calculated results show that the coastal areas of the study have relatively low strain rates with the principal strain rate <15 nano-strain/year, the magnitude of deformation is always less than 7.5 nano-strain/year, and the area is conducive to the development of dominant reverse faulting.

An important feature in the interpretation of gravity data is the determination of the edges of the density structures. There are several different enhancement techniques used to achieve the edge locations. In this study, we aim to estimate the effectiveness of some edge enhancement techniques such as the total horizontal gradient, analytic signal, theta map, and logistic function of the total horizontal gradient in terms of their accuracy on detection of subsurface structures from gravity data. These methods were tested on synthetic gravity data with and without noise. Findings show that the logistic function of the total horizontal gradient performs better than other methods under almost all cases. Additionally, the methods are also applied to real gravity data from the Phu Khanh basin as a practical example. The results determined by the LTHG technique reveals the presence of many structures with E-W, NE-SW, NNW-SSE, ENE-WSW, and NNE-SSW trends in the basin.
