Pliocene - present tectonics and strain rate in Ninh Thuan region and surrounding continental shelf

Abstract: In this paper, we present detail data of Pliocene - present tectonics and strain rate from GPS measurement and seismic interpretation. Using international reference frame ITRF08, we revealed absolute tectonic velocities of GPS sites with the slip rate to the east between 22 to 25 mm/year, to the south between 4 to 8 mm/year. The present strain rate was determined from present tectonic velocities that were consistent with the recent strain rates determined from seismic profiles, thickness of Pliocene - Quaterna… Show more

“…The East Vietnam Sea formed by seafloor spreading is a marginal sea of the Western Pacific (Tapponnier et al, 1986;Liem et al, 2021). It is situated at the intersection of the Australian, Eurasian and Indian plates (Luong et al, 2021).…”

“…This allowed for a preliminary evaluation of modern tectonic deformation activities and the correlation between modern tectonic deformation and geological-tectonic activities in the area. (Phan et al, 2021, Liem et al, 2021 Constructed a comprehensive observation grid covering the entire East Sea of Vietnam and the mainland to create research maps of modern tectonic deformation rates for the region at a 1:500,000 scale. This is the most recent and detailed study on tectonic displacement and modern tectonic deformation rates for the entire Vietnam mainland and surrounding sea areas.…”

“…Geophysical methods have been used for many years in the determination of nature and processes of the Earth [1][2][3][4][5][6][7], and gravity method is one of the oldest methods used to solve this problem [8,9]. Despite the development of an increasing number of additional exploration techniques, some of which can determine geological structures with higher resolution, the gravity method has continued to be an important and sometimes crucial constraint in a wide variety of terrestrial investigations [8][9][10].…”
