PLIO: a generic tool for real-time operational predictive optimal control of water networks

Abstract: This paper presents a generic tool, named PLIO, that allows to implement the real-time operational control of water networks. Control strategies are generated using predictive optimal control techniques. This tool allows the flow management in a large water supply and distribution system including reservoirs, open-flow channels for water transport, water treatment plants, pressurized water pipe networks, tanks, flow/pressure control elements and a telemetry/telecontrol system. Predictive optimal control is use… Show more

“…As result of the application of this methodology to a particular WDN, a set of 90 dynamic and static relationships that lead to a system of DAEs in discrete-time ready to be used in the implementation of the MPC is obtained. A WDN can be decomposed by a set of constitutive elements: reservoirs/tanks, control valves, pump stations, nodes and water demand sectors, each being characterised by means of flow-head relations [8, 16,22,23].…”

“…PLIO, which is a tool for the optimal operational control of DWN that implements non-linear MPC as introduced in Cembrano et al (2011), has been developed using standard GUI(graphical user interface) techniques and objective oriented programming using Visual Basic.NET. In PLIO, models are built using the GAMS optimization modelling language.…”

“…Other authors employ discrete dynamic programming as presented in Zessler and Shamir (1989), which is only applicable to small networks. There exist tools like PLIO in Cembrano et al (2011), which is able to solve both linear and non-linear MPC problems with a gradient-based optimization being only able to guarantee local optimal solutions.…”

“…This allows testing the controller against a virtual reality introducing for example real demand in the simulator different from the predicted demand used by the controller. The MPC controller was implemented with the tool presented in (Cembrano, 2011) that uses GAMS/CONPOPT solver to solve the optimization problem (16) (see Appendix I).…”
