Pleomorphic Adenoma in Ectopic Salivary Tissue of the Neck

Abstract: Introduction: The presence of salivary heterotopic tissue is uncommon and even more rarely neoplasms arise from aberrant salivary gland tissue. The finding of a benign mixed tumour (pleomorphic adenoma) in heterotopic salivary tissue along the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, in the upper neck, is extremely rare.Case Report: We present the fourth case -in adults patients-of ectopic mixed salivary tumour occurring in the upper neck, with regard to clinical and histological features, diagnostic… Show more

“…[ 4 ] Various theories have been put forward to explain the basis of HGST, for example, epithelial remnants from the brachial apparatus. [ 8 ] Pleomorphic adenoma is the second most common tumour of HGST, the first being Warthin’s tumour. [ 7 ] Very few cases of pleomorphic adenoma at ectopic salivary tissue in the upper cervical region have been described so far.…”

“…The regions involved are submandibular 9 , upper cervical 10,11,12 , subcutaneous plane in lower neck13 region. The symptoms varied from dysphagia and upper airway obstruction to asymptomatic neck mass [9][10][11][12][13] . In our case mass arose from thyroglossal duct presenting as a symptomatic midline neck swelling, which makes it a rare presentation.…”

“…The ectopic salivary gland tissue may be found in other rare sites like external auditory canal, lip, lacrymal glands, hard and soft palate, middle ear, mastoid bone, tongue, tonsils and tonsillar fossa, in the neck. [3][4][5][6][7] Majority of external ear tumors arises from external auditory canal. The finding of a benign mixed salivary tumor in auricle is extremely rare presentation.…”
