Despite the fact that information flow in Soviet society was controlled by the political authorities, there were many political jokes in Soviet Estonia. Most jokes during that era tended to be politically motivated as they mocked social conditions, leaders and other grotesque phenomena in the society. Even ethnic jokes had political subtext. In this article, I will look into the details and reasons for telling such jokes. Qualitative open interviews were conducted for the pilot study to gather information about joke-telling situations and justifications. The limited number of interviews (5 altogether) is enough to get hold of the concepts and emotions behind Soviet joke-telling in Estonia, and this will form the basis for my further research on the same issue.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuat mikrokapsul minyak jahe dengan menggunakan teknik spray drying. Bahan penyalut yang digunakan adalah maltodekstrin. Variabel penelitian yang dipelajari adalah konsentrasi maltodekstrin yaitu 10, 20 dan 30 (%-b/v) dan rasio minyak jahe terhadap maltodekstrin yaitu 1:8, 1:10, 1:12 dan 1:14 (b/v). Variabel penelitian dengan rendemen tertinggi akan digunakan untuk mempelajari pengaruh variasi suhu inlet proses spray drying (160, 170, 180 dan 190 o C). Hasil analisis gas kromatografi-spektrofotometri massa menunjukkan bahwa ada lima komponen terbesar yang terdapat dalam minyak jahe yaitu benzene (28,62%), zingiberene (19,46%), β-bisabolene (13,48%), cyclohexane (12,59%) dan farnesene (5,83%). Rendemen produk mikrokapsul minyak jahe tertinggi diperoleh pada perlakuan konsentrasi maltodekstrin 30% dan rasio minyak jahe terhadap maltodekstrin 1:14 yaitu sebesar 37 gram. Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa peningkatan suhu inlet spray drying memberikan pengaruh terhadap kadar air, kadar minyak total, kadar minyak di permukaan dan kadar minyak terperangkap mikrokapsul minyak jahe. Hasil analisis Scanning Electron Microscopy menunjukkan mikrostruktur produk mikrokapsul minyak atsiri jahe yang dihasilkan memiliki bentuk yang bervariasi.

Recollections of emerging hybrid ethnic identities in Soviet Central Asia: the case of Uzbekistan

This paper is a contribution to the debate about how people in Central Asia recall Soviet ethnic policies and their vision of how these policies have shaped the identities of their peers and contemporaries. In order to do so, this paper utilizes the outcomes of in-depth interviews about everyday Soviet life in Uzbekistan conducted with 75 senior citizens between 2006 and 2009. These narratives demonstrate that people do not explain Soviet ethnic policies simply through the “modernization” or “victimization” dichotomy but place their experiences in between these discourses. Their recollections also highlight the pragmatic flexibility of the public's adaptive strategies to Soviet ethnic policies. This paper also argues that Soviet ethnic policy produced complicated hybrid units of identities and multiple social strata. Among those who succeeded in adapting to the Soviet realities, a new group emerged, known as Russi assimilados (Russian-speaking Sovietophiles). However, in everyday life, relations between the assimilados and their “indigenous” or “nativist” countrymen are reported to have been complicated, with clear divisions between these two groups and separate social spaces of their own for each of these strata.
