Player Session Rating of Perceived Exertion: A More Valid Tool Than Coaches’ Ratings to Monitor Internal Training Load in Elite Youth Female Basketball

Abstract: Purpose: To monitor elite youth female basketball training to verify whether players’ and coaches’ (3 technical coaches and 1 physical trainer) session rating of perceived exertion (s-RPE) has a relationship with Edwards’ method. Methods: Heart rate of 15 elite youth female basketball players (age 16.7 [0.5] y, height 178 [9] cm, body mass 72 [9] kg, body mass index 22.9 [2.2] kg·m−2) was monitored during 19 team (268 individual) training sessions (102 [15] min). Mixed effect models were applied to evaluate wh… Show more

“…Several ecological methods are available, defined as those that entail little or no cost, proven also to be useful and reliable (82). RPE is a cost-free ecological tool that gives us information about how the player perceived the stimulus of training or competition (51,52). It is normally used between 10 and 30 minutes after finishing training (21,25,66).…”

“…[1][2][3][4] In particular, the CR-10 Borg scale modified by Foster has been commonly used to measure RPE in sports, 5 whereas the Edwards' heart rate (HR)-based method resulted in being the most adopted reference criterion. 3,6 Although ITL has been extensively studied in invasion team sports (eg, soccer, 1 American football, 7 and basketball 6 ), it has been less considered in net team sports, such as volleyball. 8,9 Due to its intermittent nature, volleyball is characterized by short duration and high-intensity and explosive efforts.…”

“…9 However, regardless of specific differences for types of training sessions, genders, and competition levels, the relationship between session-RPE and Edwards' HR-based method Q4 resulted in highly satisfactory monitoring of ITL in team sport. [1][2][3]6,9 Even if the RPE score is mainly linked to physiological variables, such as HR, ventilation, respiratory rate, oxygen uptake, and blood lactate concentrations, 15 psychological factors also appear to be correlated. Indeed, impaired psychological well-being factors (ie, stress, anxiety, and emotional response) can negatively affect readiness to train and perform in competition, 16 or influence acute neuromuscular performance and hormonal concentration in elite female volleyball players.…”

“…This platform has been validated for assessing vertical jumps (De Blas et al, 2012). The RPE questionnaire and the duration annotation were also used in the research (Lupo et al, 2019).…”
