Children and young people are everywhere (present) but often nowhere (absent). They can be seen but not heard, they may use their voice but not be listened to. As a substantially marginalised group of humans, they experience absence and presence in different ways to older people and are confronted with contradictory experiences and recognition. Children and youth face a range of disadvantages in relational comparison of understandings and interpretations of ‘adulthood’. They are described as unready, immature, unformed, citizens‐in‐waiting and caught in interstitial nowhere/everywhere betweenness. However, geographers of children and young people are engaging with political conceptualisations of younger people that provide space for discourse, dialogue and discussion combined with an ethics of seeing, looking, hearing, listening, supporting and including children and young people. This article spins out from the three Dossier papers and weaves a threaded analytical examination of absent/presence and present/absence.

Although children of all ages have the right to participate in urban planning projects, pre‐literate children’s voices are absent from urban debates. In this paper, we explore pre‐schoolers’ experiences in, and expectations for, their city by drawing on a participatory research project that used neighbourhood walks and a tile‐based mapping exercise. Findings suggest that young children, although largely absent from planning, policy or child‐friendly city discourses, nonetheless, deeply engage with and value their city and its human and non‐human inhabitants. In our study pre‐schoolers from Dunedin, New Zealand created an urban environment which cares for their citizens by being safe, socially and physically connected and has destinations, amenities and services available for all ages and abilities. We argue in this paper that pre‐schoolers created not only cities based on their own experiences, but ‘care‐full’ cities that ensure the liveability, flourishing and wellbeing for humans and non‐humans.

A central idea of the concept of sustainable development refers to intergenerational responsibility. Children's well-being should be one of the focal points of policy concerns and the spatial planning process. The fundamental right of children to play should be reflected by the arrangement of unique, accessible and attractive playgrounds where children can develop their physical, social and intellectual capacities. The present study is an exploratory analysis that aims to quantify the positional, structural and functional characteristics of children's playgrounds (CPs) in two important cities of the North-East Region -Iași and Bacău. The comparative evaluation is based on: 1) the identification of the local socio-demographic context; 2) the detailed field observation of the majority of existing playgrounds in the two cities; 3) making an inventory, the assessment and systematization of the essential aspects of this facilities from the viewpoint of accessibility, attractiveness and safety; 4) the critical analysis of the elements concerning the local policies in this field and 5) the attempt to offer some concrete solutions derived either from the reality in the field or from the models offered by the scientific literature. Two fundamental ideas emerge: on the one hand, the role of playgrounds to bring children closer to nature and movement, and on the other hand, the ability of playgrounds to become equitable, environmentally friendly community spaces, vectors of urban sustainability.
