Plautinisches Im Silius? Two Episodes From Silius Italicus’ Punica

Abstract: This paper explores certain Plautine, comic elements and features in two episodes from Silius Italicus' Punica, in books 7 and 11. Venus' role in both books is a prominent one: in book 7, the poet narrates the origins of the Trojan war and by extension the Punic wars themselves; in book 11, Venus brings about the downfall of Hannibal, when she sends her sons, the Cupids, to Capua to prolong the stay of the Carthaginians in Campania.
