Abstruct-The influence of Ni-Zn ferrite plated underlayers on grain size and magnetic characteristics of sputter-deposited Co-Cr-Ta layers was investigated. These properties were found to be strongly influenced by the surface texture of the underlayers. When the grain size of the underlayers was large (200-300 nm), the grains in the Co-Cr-Ta layers seemed to aggregate and were not isolated clearly. When the grain size of the underlayers was small (50-70 nm), the grain size in the Co-Cr-Ta layers decreased and the perpendicular coercivity increased to over 2 kOe. Further studies showed RE sputter-etching of the underlayers reduced grain size (30-50 nm), and increased perpendicular coercivity (3.0 kOe), presumably through a reduction of surface roughness and a formation of many fine nodules on the underlayers, which play a role of nucleation sites for the CO-Cr-Ta grains.

Abstract-Ferrite-plated films were studied for application as perpendicular recording media. Though the ferrite plating has a merit of low temperature process below 100 °C, the microstructure must be improved for the media application.Power ultrasound irradiation into reaction solutions had effects on the reduction of grain size and the improvement of crystallinity maybe due to the increase of the nucleation sites on substrates and the acceleration of the ion migration in reaction.

Ferrite plating facilitates formation of polycrystalline spinel ferrite films (Feax M x 04, M=Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, etc.) at low temperature in an aqueous solution. Though prepared at low temperature «90 t), the.magneti? properties of the films. are .as good as those in bulk samples, the ferrite platIng openIng the door.to new f~rr~te fIlm devices using a non-heat-resistant substrate. In this paper ~e descrIb~ the prIncI~le and methods of ferrite plating and report structural and magnetIc propertIes of the fIlms as well as the deposition rat~ of the films in connection with the conditions under which the ferrite plating is performed.
