The concept of a “digital twin” as a model for data-driven management and control of physical systems has emerged over the past decade in the domains of manufacturing, production, and operations. In the context of buildings and civil infrastructure, the notion of a digital twin remains ill-defined, with little or no consensus among researchers and practitioners of the ways in which digital twin processes and data-centric technologies can support design and construction. This paper builds on existing concepts of Building Information Modeling (BIM), lean project production systems, automated data acquisition from construction sites and supply chains, and artificial intelligence to formulate a mode of construction that applies digital twin information systems to achieve closed loop control systems. It contributes a set of four core information and control concepts for digital twin construction (DTC), which define the dimensions of the conceptual space for the information used in DTC workflows. Working from the core concepts, we propose a DTC information system workflow—including information stores, information processing functions, and monitoring technologies—according to three concentric control workflow cycles. DTC should be viewed as a comprehensive mode of construction that prioritizes closing the control loops rather than an extension of BIM tools integrated with sensing and monitoring technologies.

Business and innovation models based on an idea of a digital platform have revolutionized information technology use in many consumer areas where uptake of IT would have otherwise been slow. Slow is also the uptake of information technology in construction. The hypothesis of this paper is that the delivery mechanism for technology has not been the most suitable one and that this can be improved upon – using the digital platforms. Term platform has been used before. In this paper we define the concept of a digital construction platform. We then analyse their potential in construction processes, focusing on construction design. The paper contributes to the understanding of an emerging new paradigm for the delivery, marketing, and innovation in digital technology in construction. Follow up work will examine the platforms from the structure-function-behaviour perspective and present their architectural foundations.

Lack of innovation and productivity in the construction industry compared to other industries is often explained by the institutionalized roles and fragmented nature of the construction value chain. Closer connections and collaboration (such as strategic partnerships) among architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) companies and across the values chain is often prescribed as a strategy to improve the performance of the construction industry. However, the institutional roles of AEC companies serve as important reference points for the sector. They have over time been translated into business practices in companies giving rise to a number of archetypical business models. How these business models interact, and the friction created when they come in close contact is not well researched and understood. This paper identifies business models archetypes for architect, engineer, contractor and materials supplier based on workshops and interviews with practitioners. Friction is identified in and between the business models of AEC companies engaging in strategic partnerships. The analysis shows that architect archetypes face friction with regard to their profit formula and could benefit from profit sharing. The engineering archetypes face friction in their processes since they have to coordinate with specialists from other companies.Contractor and supplier archetypes face friction in their profit formula since the open books force them to alter business practices.
