Platelets, a Key Cell in Inflammation and Atherosclerosis Progression

Abstract: Platelets play important roles in thrombosis-dependent obstructive cardiovascular diseases. In addition, it has now become evident that platelets also participate in the earliest stages of atherosclerosis, including the genesis of the atherosclerotic lesion. Moreover, while the link between platelet activity and hemostasis has been well established, the role of platelets as modulators of inflammation has only recently been recognized. Thus, through their secretory activities, platelets can chemically attract a… Show more

“…This index has been used in the field of oncology, but in the last few years, it has become a promising biomarker in other conditions, particularly in cardiovascular disease [ 20 , 21 , 22 ]. In the atherosclerotic process, the inflammatory response and oxidative stress also play important roles, and the activation of platelets by inflammatory triggers may be a critical component of vascular damage [ 23 , 24 ].…”

“…Studies have suggested that changes of platelet size, density and other parameters in blood circulation have an important impact on the development and prognosis of ACS 20 . There is also evidence that platelets cross the endothelium and act as a direct mediator of plaque development 21 .…”

“…However, under pathological conditions, platelets are prone to uncontrolled activation and aggregation, and may lead to vascular occlusion. Platelet activation can cause blood vessels to block and promote AS development (Huilcaman et al, 2022; Lindemann, Kramer, Seizer, & Gawaz, 2007). LA inhibits the activation of phospholipase Cγ2 (PLCγ2)–PKC, Akt and MAPK and subsequently attenuates calcium and glycoprotein IIbIIIa (GPIIbIIIa) activation and ATP release, p‐selectin secretion, and calcium, thereby blocking platelet aggregation and thrombus formation (Lien et al, 2017).…”
