Platelet-to-White Blood Cell Ratio: A Feasible Biomarker for Pyogenic Liver Abscess

Abstract: The platelet-to-white blood cell ratio (PWR) has been reported to predict the severity of patients with various diseases. However, no previous studies have assessed the use of the PWR as a prognostic marker for pyogenic liver abscesses (PLA). This observational retrospective study was performed between January 2008 and December 2017, including 833 patients with PLA from multiple centers. The enrolled patients, on average, had a PWR of 17.05, and 416 patients had a PWR lower than 17.05. A total of 260 patients … Show more

“…Šis paprastas ir ekonomiškas žymuo atskleidė, jog asmenims, kurie serga PKA ir turi žemesnį nei 17,05 TLS, žymiai dažniau pasireiškia tokios komplikacijos kaip metastazinės infekcijos, skysčio susikaupimas pleuros ertmėje, pailgėja hospitalizacijos laikas. Reguliarus TLS stebėjimas gali padėti anksčiau nustatyti komplikacijas ir pagerinti prognozę [6].…”

“…The platelet-to-white blood cell ratio (PWR), a potential biomarker of vascular inflammation predicting acute ischemic stroke and cardiovascular risk [27,28], has never been assessed in relation to psoriasis. Moreover, the usefulness of PWR in hepatic diseases has been, until now, tested only in acute-to-chronic liver failure (ACLF) [29], HBV-positive patients [30], and pyogenic liver abscesses [31].…”

“…It has been reported to be used in predicting short-term postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing renal malignancy surgery [16]. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated to serve as an independent predictor of clinical outcomes in acute promyelocytic leukemia [17], ischemic stroke [18], and pyogenic liver abscesses [19]. Apart from their hemostatic function, platelets can trigger and exacerbate inflammation by interacting with immune cells and secreting pro-inflammatory cytokines.…”
