Platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha-positive cells: a new cell type in the human ureteropelvic junction

Abstract: ConclusionThis study shows, for the first time, the PDGFRα cell expression in the human UPJ. Altered SK3 channel expression observed in PDGFRα cells in UPJ obstruction suggests that the impairment of SK3 activity across the UPJ may perturb upper urinary tract peristalsis in this urological condition.

“…Although we observed only low expression of Kcnn3 , expression of SK3 protein was reported in PDGFRα + cells in human renal UPJ (Hunziker et al . 2017), and SK3 expression (but not PDGFRα expression) was reduced in patients with uretero‐pelvic junction obstruction (Hunziker et al . 2017).…”

“…The known network of peptide ligands and GPCRs spans 407 interactions between 219 peptides and 138 receptors in human [ 166 ]. For example, growth factors are recognized by specialized receptor tyrosine kinases, such as epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) [ 167 ] and platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRα) [ 168 ]. The endothelin signaling peptides bind to their respective endothelin receptors ETA, ETB1, ETB2 and ETC [ 163 ].…”

“…Besides the bladder, PDGFRα (+) cells are distributed in other regions of the urinary tract including the renal pelvis, 8 ureteropelvic junction, 9 and urethra 10 where various forms of spontaneous activity are generated in their smooth muscles. PDGFRα mRNA is widely expressed in the male reproductive tissues 11 including the seminal vesicle where PDGFRα (+) cells are distributed in the mucosa.…”
