Platelet count and platelet indices in women with preeclampsia

Abstract: BackgroundAlthough the exact pathophysiology of preeclampsia is not completely understood, the utility of different platelets indices can be utilized to predict preeclampsia.ObjectiveTo compare platelet indices, namely platelet count (PC), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and PC to MPV ratio in women with preeclampsia compared with healthy controls.SettingQassim Hospital, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.DesignA case–control study. Sixty preeclamptic women were the cases and an equal numbe… Show more

“…There have been controversies regarding the value of several hematological parameters (such as D-dimer, Fbg, PLT, MPV, and PDW) and biochemical tests (such as ALB, TP, PA, ALP, and LDH) in PE prediction or in the evaluation of PE severity. For example, the value of platelet count and platelet indices in PE is supported by several studies; however, there are also studies that found no significance [23][24][25]. The significance of ALB in assessing the onset and severity of preeclampsia is also controversial [26,27].…”

“…MPV and PDW are frequently used parameters for indicating PLT activation in humans [34, 35], horses [17, 36], dogs [37, 38], and cattle [39], among others. These parameters are useful to determine PRP quality.…”

“…The positive effects of aspirin are related to its ability to irreversibly inhibit cyclooxygenase 1 (COX 1) of platelets (AlSheeha et al 2016, Khodzhaeva et al 2018). This reduces the formation of thromboxane A2, which causes vasoconstriction and activation of platelet adhesion and aggregation.…”

“…In recent years, the number of studies indicating that the main role in the development of preeclampsia is played by a violation of the functional state of the vascular endothelium, which entails the development of a generalized spasm, increased blood pressure and, as a consequence, ischemic disorders in the organs. In addition, especially dangerous and attracting an increased attention are disturbances in the hemostatic system in preeclampsia (AlSheeha et al 2016, Severinova et al 2019.…”
