The natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) based on choline chloride (ChCl) and lactic acid (LA) was used for the preparation of chitosan (CS) films by the solution casting method. The content of NADES in films was from 0 to 82 wt%. The impact of NADES on the morphology and crystalline structure of films was investigated using scanning electron microscopy as well as wide-angle and small-angle X-ray scattering. The experimental results allow to propose CS chains swelling in NADES. FTIR spectroscopy confirms the interactions between CS and NADES components via the formation of hydrogen and ion bonds. The thermal properties of the composite films were studied by simultaneous thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis. Thermomechanical analysis demonstrated appearance of two transitions at temperatures between −23 and −5 °C and 54–102 °C depending on NADES content. It was found that electrical conductivity of film with 82 wt% of NADES reaches 1.7 mS/cm. The influence of the composition and structure of films on the charge carriers concentration and their mobility is discussed.

With the objective of a more sustainable circular economy, one long‐term goal is the utilization of renewable resources as feedstock for the production of polymer‐based materials. In order to successfully process such materials using existing industrial‐scale technologies or even recycling processes, the natural polymers must have thermoplastic properties. With only a few exceptions, natural polymers are not thermoplastic. However, chemical and physical modification techniques are able to induce thermoplasticity in natural polymers from biomass resources such as cellulose, lignin, and chitin. Modification techniques focus on masking the hydroxyl groups to disrupt dense hydrogen bonding and so enable polymer chain mobility upon heating. The introduction of long alkyl chains into the polymer backbone effectively improves the thermoplastic processing of natural polymers. With regard to polymer blending, chemical grafting and graft copolymerization are powerful tools for enhancing compatibility. For both chemical and physical modification, solvents such as ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents are currently being explored for biomass and fiber processing and show promise for the future development of thermoplastic biopolymers. This review describes possible modifications, potential processing difficulties, and gives a summary of relevant studies described in the scientific literature.

To switch to alternatives for fossil‐fuel‐based polymer materials, renewable raw materials from green resources should be utilized. Chitosan is such a material that is a strong, but workable derivative from chitin, obtained from crustaceans. However, various applications ask for specific plastic properties, such as certain flexibility, hardness and transparency. With different additives, also obtainable from green resources, chitosan‐based composites in the form of self‐supporting films, ranging from very hard and brittle to soft and flexible were successfully produced. The additives turn out to belong to one of three categories, namely linear, non‐linear, or crosslinking additives. The non‐linear additives could only be taken up to a certain relative amount, whereas the uptake of linear additives was not limited within the range of our experiments. Additives with multiple functional groups tend to crosslink chitosan even at room temperature in an acidic medium. Finally, it was shown that dissolving the chitosan in acetic acid and subsequently drying the matrix as a film results in reacetylation compared to the starting chitosan source, resulting in a harder material. With these findings, it is possible to tune the properties of chitosan‐based polymer materials, making a big step towards application of this renewable polymer within consumer goods.
