Plasticity at axon initial segment of hippocampal CA3 neurons in rat after status epilepticus induced by lithium–pilocarpine

Abstract: Nav1.6 and ankyrin G may participate in the plastic changes in the AIS of hippocampus CA3 neurons after PISE and play potential roles in epileptogenesis by regulating neuronal excitability.

“…AIS plasticity was originally discovered in excitatory neurons (Grubb & Burrone, ; Kuba, Oichi, & Ohmori, ), but recently it has also been reported in a subpopulation of dopaminergic inhibitory neurons of the rodent's olfactory bulb (Chand, Galliano, Chesters, & Grubb, ). AIS plasticity has been shown to occur during postnatal development in mouse visual cortex (Gutzmann et al, ) and monkey prefrontal cortex (Fish, Hoftman, Sheikh, Kitchens, & Lewis, ), and also in pathophysiological conditions such as epilepsy (Feng et al, ; Harty et al, ) and stroke (Hinman, Rasband, & Carmichael, ).…”

“…The method of modeling was conducted in the same manner as our previous work (34,35). Briefly, the experimental group was treated with lithium chloride (125 mg/kg, i.p., Sigma-Aldrich, USA), and 18-20 h later, methyl atropine bromide (1 mg/kg, i.p.…”
