Plastic pollutants in water environment

Abstract: Nowadays, wide applications of plastics result in plastic waste being present in the water environment in a wide variety of sizes. Plastic wastes are in water mainly as microplastics (the size range of 1 nm to < 5 mm). Microplastics have been recognized as an emerging threat, as well as ecotoxicological and ecological risk for water ecosystems. In this review are presented some of the physicochemical properties of plastic materials that determine their toxic effect on the aquatic environment. Wastewater tre… Show more

“…They are also very cheap in the market and easy to find in any grocery store. It was mentioned in the literature that, since the 1950s, the production of plastic had increased from 1.5 million tons to more than 300 million tons in 2015, which is almost 200 times more [ 2 ]. The rapid growth of plastic usage is due to the various types of plastic products currently found in the market, ranging from household, personal goods, and packaging to the manufacturing of construction materials.…”

“…These events imply bad practice of waste management and inadequate developed infrastructure within the affected sites, leading to a worldwide environmental issue later [15] . Thus, microplastics pollutions in marine water have been acknowledged as a worldwide environmental threats as it poses ecotoxicological and ecological risk to marine organisms and human [16]. Thus, the aim of this review is to discuss microplastics, highlighting the potential routes of them entering the marine environment and their toxic effects in marine water.…”
