Plastic bronchitis associated with influenza A virus in children with asthma

Abstract: Plastic bronchitis (PB) is a rare and potentially fatal disease characterized by acute progressive dyspnea caused by bronchial casts in the bronchial tree. We analyzed two children with asthma and PB who presented with high fever, cough and dyspnea. Both cases showed acute onset and rapid disease progression. Laboratory examination revealed that both children were infected with influenza A virus. Emergency fiberoptic bronchoscopy was performed within 20 hours of admission. Immediately after removing the bronch… Show more

“…And no differences were found in the incidence of fever between severe asthma children with or without recurrent MLS, suggesting that MP infection might not be the cause of recurrent MLS. Viral infection can also cause mucus plug and atelectasis, especially influenza virus ( 30 , 31 ). In the present study, two cases with non-recurrent MLS had viral infections with influenza virus in only one case.…”

“…Respiratory viruses including influenza are a major cause of PB. 18 , 19 However, the exact incidence of PB in children with infected influenza infection has not yet been fully studied. Influenza belongs to the enveloped Orthomyxoviridae viruses and can be divided into types A, B, C and D. Both influenza A and B viruses can be further divided into subtypes based on the differential expression of the two antigens against hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N).…”

“…The high bioactivity of the bioprocessed combinations against foodborne pathogens and hangover biomarkers in rodents are most likely the result of the formation of new bioactive compounds during the fermentation process, an aspect that merits further study. Moreover, although asthma does not seem to increase risk of COVID-19 infection, it would also be of interest to determine if the bioprocessed E. cava food formulation that protected the lungs of mice against inflammatory allergic asthma might also help ameliorate the acute respiratory syndrome associated with the viral infection [31][32][33] as well as allergic manifestations associated with foods [34][35][36][37][38] and drugs [39].…”
