Abstract: pDCs constitute a central component of the inflammatory host response in inflamed warts, possibly contributing to their regression through production of type I interferons.

“…A similar role for pDCs has also been demonstrated in herpetic infections . Recently, in their study, Saadeh et al . observed pDCs constitute a central component of the inflammatory host response in inflamed warts and that their active production of type I IFNs ultimately contributes to wart regression.…”

“…Not only were pDCs present consistently and abundantly in all inflamed wart cases, but they were also present in an active state in most of the inflamed wart lesions but not in non‐inflamed warts. According to Saadeh et al ., this may raise the possibility that a genetic defect contributing to a failure in recruiting pDCs and/or their IFN secretion may be one of the immune abnormalities that lead to the persistence of warts in some patients. Several polymorphisms in the promoter region of the IFN‐ γ gene (IFNG) are considered to influence the levels of expression of this cytokine .…”

“…The researcher noted that plasmacytoid dendritic cells constitute a central component of the inflammatory host response in inflamed warts, and their active production of type I IFNs, including IFN‐γ (the defining cytokine of Th1 cells), ultimately contributes to wart regression . Similarly, immunological clearance of HSILs through Th1 immune response against the HPV antigen may be an explanation of spontaneous regression of most of the lesions after depilation discontinuation as reported by García‐Souto et al Therapeutically, imiquimod treatment also induced plasmacytoid dendritic cell infiltrates with upregulation of IFN‐γ at the sites of cellular atypia, that is, HSIL .…”
