Plasma Treatments to Improve the Bonding of Thermo-Treated Cherry Wood

Abstract: Thermal treatment can significantly improve the dimensional stability of wood, but it will decrease the bonding strength. In this work, the bonding strength of thermo-treated cherry wood boards was improved by plasma treatment. The change of wettability, surface morphology, and surface chemical property of cherry wood before and after plasma treatment was investigated by water contact angle measurement, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS… Show more

“…It has also been found in the literature that the plasma modification process changes the adhesion strength and the parameters of the plasma treatment process have an effect on the adhesion strength, and this is similar to the results of the present study. [ 48 , 50 , 51 , 53 , 64 , 65 ]. In addition, it has been found in the literature that the conditions of heat treatment are also effective on the adhesion strength and this is similar to the results of the present study.…”

“…According to literature studies show that plasma application factors such as treatment speed, working distance, pressure, application time, power, and frequency were effective in changing the characteristic properties of the material surface. In addition to these, the properties vary with the geometry and frequency of the electrode induced by plasma and corona discharge [ 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 ].…”

“…Plasma surface modification can be a solution as its burden on the environment is considerably less. There are attempts to replace conventional wood treatment methods with plasma treatment [55][56][57]. However, the impact of plasma treatment is still being explored and we believe that the complete elimination of traditional methods is yet to be seen.…”
