Plasma Therapy at Klinikum Grosshadern: A 15‐Year Retrospective

Abstract: Immediately after the availability of highly permeable membranes in 1979, membrane plasma separation was introduced as a mode of extracorporeal blood purification by the nephrology group at Klinikum Grosshadern of the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (F.R.G.). The new therapy was applied primarily in the management of immunologically mediated renal and extrarenal disorders as well as in paraproteinemias. We also have witnessed a widespread application of this extracorporeal treatment as a last resort in… Show more

“…In patients not responding to conventional drug therapy, plasmapheresis and more recently adsorption techniques offer rapid improvement of patient symptomatology. The acetylcholine receptor antibodies can be removed unselectively by plasma perfusion over tryptophan linked to polyvinyl alcohol (Immusorba® TR-350; ASAHI, Tokyo, Japan) (113,114). Ths column is designed for single use and allows the perfusion of about 2 liters of plasma.…”

“…Coupled to polyvinyl‐alcohol gel, phenylalanine and tryptophane bind immunoglobulins, but preferentially several antibodies (anti‐DNA antibodies, anticardiolipin antibodies, rheumatoid factor) and immune complexes semiselectively via hydrophobic interactions (41). Currently, 2 disposable adsorber columns are available (Immusorba PH‐350 and Immusorba TR‐350, Asahi Medical Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) with a capacity to treat 2,500 ml of plasma.…”

“…Sr.
