Plasma startup using neutral beam injection assisted by 2.45 GHz microwaves in Heliotron J

Abstract: Neutral beam injection (NBI) plasmas have been initiated with the assistance of 5 kW, 2.45 GHz microwaves in a medium-sized heliotron, Heliotron J plasmas with a line-averaged electron density of over 1 × 1019 m−3 are generated with 1 MW NBI using a magnetic field between 0.63 and 1.25 T within 20 ms after turning on NBI. This technique does not require the electron cyclotron resonance layer for the plasma startup, which enables us to enlarge the operational space for the magnetic field strength. Electron cycl… Show more

“…It also explains why this scenario can only be started if there are previously existing relativistic electrons. In this experiment these electrons were produced by resonant ECRH, but other methods, like a finite loop voltage, could be similarly efficient [6]. The residence zone of the fast particles close to the antenna field was detected by a movable probe.…”

“…Here, the blue and orange lines are the ΔT averaged in the upper-half and lower-left regions of the foil, respectively. A seed plasma is produced with the assistance of 2.45 GHz non-resonant pre-heating and a high-temperature plasma is produced using NBI [6]. The ΔT gradually increases in the upper region at the timing of the magnetron turn-on and a sharp increase in ΔT is observed immediately after NBI injection.…”
