Plasma sheet thickness and electric currents

Abstract: Abstract. Two years of Geotail data in the (-30 < x < -8, lyl < 15) R E region first were sorted into (x, y, [3) boxes. Direct measurements of the average electron and ion current densities, symmetry assumptions, and the momentum equation were used to get three different estimates of the electric current in each box. The momentum equation method gave the most consistent results, while the other two methods provided complementary information about particle drifts. The average common drift of electrons and ions … Show more

“…The tendency for a component of the bulk flow to point away from midnight has been noted previously [Kaufmann et al, 2001;Wang et al, 2006]. This behavior suggests a source of plasma near midnight associated with flow toward the neutral sheet from the outer plasma sheet and the subsequent flow away from midnight in the neutral sheet.…”

“…Values of the current density resulting from the linear estimation of the ∇×B are underestimated, because of the relatively large inter-spacecraft separation during the 2001 tail period, however, typically they are by a factor of 2 larger than the values obtained by analysis of longer crossings (3.5 nA/m 2 , Zhang et al, 2005) and statistical values of the current density in the plasma sheet, calculated from measured ion and electron moments (1-3 nA/m 2 , Kaufmann et al, 2001). …”

“…Besides, the main convection component in the middle tail during the quiet periods (without BBFs) is the dawn-dusk drift velocity. Taking into account the substantial contribution of the fast flows to the convection, we can expect that the vortex plasma motion, accompanying the BBFs, plays a significant role in the formation of a cross-tail component of the average convection pattern (Hori et al, 2000;Kaufmann et al, 2001). …”

“…Our survey of individual events shows that during the isolated V x enhancement above the average level (that is, above several tens km/s, according to Kaufmann et al, 2001), the V y flows often display a complicated variation at smaller time-scale. In this case the episodes with V y >V thr are shorter than those with V x >V thr for the same threshold value.…”
