Plasma semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase is elevated in patients with congestive heart failure

Abstract: The finding of elevated plasma SSAO in CHF, increasing with severity of the disease and with the concomitant presence of DM, supports the suggestion that SSAO may be involved in the pathogenesis of vascular endothelial damage. Plasma SSAO may be a useful parameter in assessing severity of CHF and in prognostic evaluation. Pharmacologic manipulation of SSAO activity might be an interesting new concept for prevention of vascular endothelial damage in various vascular disease entities.

“…The Type II diabetic group was older than the Type I diabetic group and plasma SSAO could increase a little with age [23]; in this study, however, age did not reach statistical significance in multiple regression analysis. Even compared to an older control group, however, the activity in the Type II diabetic group was clearly raised (619 vs 455 mU/l, p < 0.0001) [23].…”

Even compared to an older control group, however, the activity in the Type II diabetic group was clearly raised (619 vs 455 mU/l, p < 0.0001) [23]. The mean activity of 621 mU/l in Type I was a little higher than the mean activity we found previously in Type I diabetic patients without complications (486 mU/l) but similar to the activities in those with Type I with complications (581±641 mU/l) [14].…”

“…Histamine released from cardiac mast cells can react with the medium, provoking coronary spasm and contributing to myocardial infarction [31,32]. Moreover, an increase of plasma levels of AOs in congestive heart failure was found [33]. A close relationship between histamine, acting as a pro-oxidant, and ROS was observed in patients with coronary heart disease [30].…”
