Plasma renin activity responses to graded decreases in renal perfusion pressure in fetal and newborn lambs

Abstract: We examined the relationship between acute reductions in renal perfusion pressure, as approximated by femoral arterial blood pressure, and plasma renin activity in the uninephrectomized fetal lamb. Renal perfusion pressure was reduced and maintained at a constant value by controlled partial occlusion of the aorta above the renal artery. After 15 min of reduced blood pressure, blood samples were taken for determination of plasma renin activity. This protocol was performed 22 times in 11 fetal lambs. Additionall… Show more

“…This is speculated to be due to near complete saturation of receptors with circulating Ang II but may be a result of decreases in receptor sensitivity. The fetal lamb's ability to respond with increased and decreased urine output was shown to be intact and nearly equal to the response of the adult (Binder and Anderson, 1992).…”

“…However, there are several reasons why renin synthesis and release may have been suppressed in the current study. Arterial pressure was increased significantly in this group of fetuses, and the role of blood pressure in the control of renin release by the fetal sheep kidney has been well described (2). Volume expansion (discussed below) may also have suppressed plasma renin levels.…”
