Plasma Reactivity and Plasma-Surface Interactions During Treatment of Toluene by a Dielectric Barrier Discharge

Abstract: Toluene removal is investigated in filamentary plasmas produced in N 2 and in N 2 /O 2 mixtures by a pulse high voltage energised DBD. Influence of the oxygen percentage (lower than 10%) and of the temperature (lower than 350°C) is examined. Toluene is removed in N 2 through collisions with electrons and nitrogen excited states. The removal efficiency is a few higher in N 2 /O 2 . It increases when the temperature increases for N 2 and N 2 /O 2 . Both H-and O-atoms play an important role in toluene removal bec… Show more

“…Further, most of the studies published on the subject were devoted to those ANTP's generated with a dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) [6][7][8][9]. The interest in DBD's is probably due to the ability of these systems to avoid sparking when working in the high power density regime that is required for practical applications.…”

“…A small peak at 28 amu, likely C 2 H 4 initially, has been augmented by what is probably CO. A very negligible peak at 30 amu, possibly C 2 H 6 originally, has become significant, probably due to CH 2 O. Once again, some correlations can be made with the plasma studies on toluene of Blin-Simiand et al [4]. They discussed some possibly significant reactions associated with O( 3 P).…”

“…The mass peak at 91 amu may at least partially represent a steady state population consisting mainly of this species. Another possible species at this mass is a methylphenyl radical [4]. Blin-Simiand et al [4] used FTIR and other analysis methods to identify final stable products following discharges on toluene in N 2 and N 2 /O 2 mixtures.…”
