Plasma osteopontin is a biomarker for the severity of alcoholic liver cirrhosis, not for hepatocellular carcinoma screening

Abstract: BackgroundImplementation of surveillance programs for at-risk populations and identification of biomarkers for early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) detection are a major public health goal. Recently, osteopontin (OPN) has attracted attention as a promising biomarker, with some potential advantages compared to alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), but its role in the context of alcoholic cirrhosis has never been assessed. The aims of this study are to assess the utility of plasma OPN in the diagnosis of HCC in alcoholic cir… Show more

“…Additionally, another study agreed that allele T/T and/or T/C rather than C/C at nt -443 not only significantly enhanced metastasis, but was also associated with overall survival and time to recurrence 75 . Other than in HCC with HBV or HCV, OPN is not a useful diagnostic marker for HCC in alcoholic cirrhotic patients, particularly in the early stages, which limits OPN to become a significant diagnostic marker for HCC 76 .…”

“…This increase in plasma OPN was attributed to increased levels TNF-α and IL-1, which are increased in inflammation and stimulate the expression of OPN. Plasma OPN also correlated with disease severity in both alcoholic liver cirrhosis and hepatic fibrosis from hepatitis C virus infection (100, 101). Moreover, hydrodynamic intravenous injection of OPN siRNA reduced liver tissue injury in a murine model of concanavalin A (ConA)-induced fulminant hepatitis (102).…”
