Plasma-object diagnostics via resonant transition radiation from an electron bunch

Abstract: The resonant transition radiation from an electron charge that moves along the concentration gradient of a cold isotropic plasma is calculated. The possibility of using this radio-emission for inhomogeneous plasma diagnostics is discussed. Measurements of this kind of radiation in a planar-stratified cold isotropic plasma give the possibility of finding out the profile function of the plasma concentration profile (parts of the plasma density profile where the density is increased over its previous maximu… Show more

“…The problem of the evolution of modulated electron beams in plasma is significant due to its possible applications in areas such as dense plasma barrier transillumination for electromagnetic waves using electron beams, the planning of experiments on the injection of electron beams into space and ionosphere plasma and the interpretation of their results, and the diagnostics of inhomogeneous plasma via transition radiation of electron beams [1][2][3][4][5][6][7].…”

“…While determining whether the reconstruction of a density profile in an inhomogeneous plasma with the use of the transition radiation emitted by modulated beams and bunches of charged particles is possible, the fixed current approximation was used (see, e.g., work [13]); i.e. the dynamics of those particles under the action of excited wakefields was neglected.…”

“…The possibility of constructing the wakefield accelerators was confirmed experimentally (see, e.g., [12]). The problem of the wakefield excitation is also of interest owing to a possibility to diagnose an inhomogeneous plasma, by analyzing the transition radiation emitted by charged particles and bunches [13].…”
