Plasma‐modified Nylon 4 membrane for dialysis

Abstract: SynopsisThe effects of plasma treatment conditions, such as supply power, treatment time, gases used in reactor, surface energy, water content, dialysis permeability, partition coefficient, diffusion coefficient, and free volume of Nylon 4 membranes, were studied. The solutes considered for dialysis system.were NaC1, urea, and MgC1,. The permeabilities of NaCl and urea of membranes with plasma treated in argon a t 80 W for 20 min are 5.57 X and 5.89 X cm2/rnin, respectively. Much higher permeabilities of NaCl … Show more

“…Nylon 4 membranes have been regarded as promising membrane materials for separation purposes because of their excellent strength and inherent affinity to water. 60Co irradiation, chemical graft, and plasma deposition methods have been used to improve the performance of Nylon 4 for reverse osmosis (19), ultrafiltration (20), dialysis (21), and hemodialysis (22) as reported from our laboratory.…”

“…Use of Co60 y-ray irradiation, chemical grafting, and plasma deposition methods to improve the performance of nylon 4 for reverse osmosis,26 ultrafiltration, 27 dialysis, 28 and hemodialysis 29 have been reported by our laboratory. To improve the hydrophilicity of nylon 4 membranes for pervaporation purposes and to overcome the dissolution of PVA in water, this study attempts to obtain PVA-homog-nylon 4 membrane by y-ray irradiation homografting of vinyl acetate ( VAc) onto nylon 4 membrane, followed by hydrolysis treatment.…”

“…In addition, treatments can improve the membranes' chemical and mechanical stability 12. Therefore, sol–gel membranes have been made of inorganic materials for aluminum oxides,13 titanium oxides,14 and zirconium,15 although organic polymeric hybrid membranes have been seldom used for sol–gel composite membranes.…”
