Plasma MMP-9, TIMP-1, and TGF-β1 Responses to Exercise-Induced Muscle Injury

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to analyze changes in the levels of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) in response to strength recovery after eccentric exercise in humans. In this study, 16 healthy males participated and were divided into a faster recovery (FR) group (n = 8, >80% of baseline) and a slower recovery (SR) group (n = 8, <40% of baseline) on the basis of their recovery of maximal isometric strength (MI… Show more

“…Strength loss after stretching is measured by isometric force at single muscle length or single joint angle [ 29 ]. The MIS measurement method of this study referred to the previous studies [ 23 , 26 , 30 ]. The MIS of elbow flexor muscles was measured by using a strain gauge (Jackson Strength Evaluation System Model.…”

“…The VAS has a constant line of 100 mm, the left first position (0 mm) indicates painless state and the right end (100 mm) indicates severe pain. The VAS was distributed to the subjects, and they vertically marked the degree of pain felt at each measurement period [ 30 ].…”

“…Another proposal for determining health in athletes is to analyze IL-10 and TGF-β as biomarkers of recovery and adaptation to training [ 65 , 118 ]. However, for now, this is only a suggestion that has not been more widely studied and standardized.…”

“…Additionally, athletes have large inter-individual CK response dierences to the same exercise, further complicating the analysis of CK levels for recovery status [93]. Other biomarkers, which can be analysed for exercise recovery include transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) [408], oxylipin [744], brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BNDF), oxygen reduction potential (ORP, redox potential) [647], cell-free DNA (cfDNA) [60], and neutrophil phenotypes [762].…”
