“…The b-glucosidase gene of U. fabae is interrupted by nine introns, with an average size of 93.3 bp, a normal length for U. fabae congruent with previously published results (Struck et al 1996;Sohn et al 2000;Voegele et al 2001). Like in all U. fabae genes analyzed so far, introns followed the GT/AG rule (Hahn, unpublished data; Saxonov et al 2000).…”

“…The enzyme was found to be severalfold more active in haustoria of U. fabae than in spores or germ tubes (Struck et al 1996), which emphasizes its importance for haustorial function. The fungal amino acid permeases to which PIG2 is homologous are symport carriers that transport their substrates together with protons (Horak 1986).…”

“…While the function of most of these genes is unknown, PMA1 has been previously shown to encode a plasma membrane H + ATPase (Struck et al, 1998). Interestingly, the enzyme was found to be signiWcantly more active in membranes isolated from haustoria compared to membranes from germlings (Struck et al, 1996). However, in agreement to the microarray data, Northern blot hybridisation experiments revealed that the PMA1-encoding gene was more strongly expressed in germ tubes and in vitro grown rust hyphae than in haustoria and rust-infected leaves (Struck et al, 1998).…”
