Plasma levels of fibroblast growth factor‐23 are associated with muscle mass in haemodialysis patients

Abstract: Plasma FGF-23 concentrations were associated with muscle mass indices in HD patients. Our findings suggest that FGF-23 and nutritional status are linked and this link is most likely independent of s-Klotho.

“…Although FGF23 levels are likely to be consistently higher in XLH than during exercise, the study by Li et al identifies a novel effect of FGF23 on skeletal muscle, which may be induced by the high FGF23 levels in XLH. Plasma levels of FGF23 are also positively associated with muscle mass in haemodialysis patients, which could indicate a role for FGF23 in improving muscle strength [191].…”

“…In several crosssectional studies of haemodialysis patients, higher serum FGF23 levels were associated with lower age, higher body mass index, higher serum albumin, serum creatinine and geriatric nutritional risk index, and normalized protein catabolic index, larger abdominal muscle mass areas and creatinine production (another indicator of muscle mass). [23][24][25] A high-fat diet stimulated FGF23 production in mice. 26 In recent in vivo and in vitro studies involving mice and osteoblast-like cells, the effect of energy balance on FGF23 production was controlled by AMPactivated protein kinase, which works as a cellular energy sensor.…”

“…Those subjects, however, also had highest age, lowest body mass index, serum albumin and creatinine, which all indicate malnutrition.
