Plasma levels of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol are associated with microstructural changes within the cerebellum in the early stage of first-episode schizophrenia: a longitudinal VBM study

Abstract: The aims of this study are to determine how the interval changes of the brain structures in the early stage of first-episode schizophrenia relate to the interval changes in the clinical data, including the clinical symptoms of schizophrenia and catecholaminergic measures (plasma homovanillic acid [HVA] and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol [MHPG]). Regional brain volumes and fractional anisotropy (FA)/mean diffusivity (MD) with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) were measured at baseline and 6-month follow-up in a 3… Show more

“…Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness characterized by deficits in cognition and emotion [ 1 ]. Brain structural abnormalities are detectable in most individuals afflicted with schizophrenia during the chronic stages [ 2 ]. A 3% decrease in whole-brain volume has been observed in patients with schizophrenia, and this decrease is more prominent in gray matter (GM; 2%) than in white matter (WM; 1%) [ 3 , 4 ].…”

“…One study has examined the relationships between the HVA level and the pathophysiology of schizophrenia 8) , and in some cases, the pHVA level may be useful as a state marker. To the best of our knowledge, in this report, we examined for the first time sequential changes in NIRS findings during the process of improvement in a patient with acute schizophrenia.…”

“…Concerning the latter, it is known that different antipsychotics may have a differential effect on pHVA levels [15,38], albeit that in a recent study of Nishimura and co-workers [39], no association between pHVA and dose of antipsychotics could be established.…”
