Plasma interleukin-6 levels correlate with survival in patients with bacterial sepsis and septic shock

Abstract: In this study, IL-6 levels were assessed as inflammatory biomarker of bacterial sepsis in patients hospitalized at the ICU of the hospital of Colombia.Materials and methodsProspective study on 62 patients diagnosed with sepsis and septic shock. An ELISA assay was used to test serum levels of IL-6 at admission and 48 h after admission. Variables were analyzed by χ2 test (alfa <0.05). Multivariable Cox regression was used to determine the survival with the statistical program SPSS v23.00.ResultsPatient's medi… Show more

“…Additionally, it would be valuable to correlate the insights derived from NEUT-RI with IL-6 levels for early sepsis diagnosis. As indicated in the literature, IL-6 plays a pivotal role in determining the prognosis of patients in the ICU [32]. Integrating IL-6 data with the previously obtained information on NEUT-RI and PCT has the potential to enhance the specificity and/or sensitivity of the outcome, offering a more comprehensive understanding.…”

“…Especially, plasma levels of IL-6 are considered an important biomarker positively associated with septic shock in patients. Furthermore, patients who exhibit elevated levels of IL-6 have a lower survival rate than those with lower levels, prompting studies that aim to develop therapeutic agents such as anti-IL-6 antibodies [ 67 , 68 , 69 ]. The effectiveness of F-CSA in treating sepsis was evaluated using an LPS-induced mouse model in this study.…”

“…Damit ist die Kinetik von Interleukin-6 deutlich schneller als beim CRP und PCT, die eine "Response"-Halbwertszeit von 6-8 h bis zum Anstieg aufweisen [30]. Darüber hinaus kann IL-6 zur Prognoseabschätzung genutzt werden [30,31].…”
