“…This is in contrast to baboon plasma that lacks oxytocinase, at least in vitro, as reflected by the lack of oxytocin metabolism. Since oxytocinase is confined to the syncytiotrophoblastic cells of the placenta [9] and since its concentration is significantly correlated with the placental weight [10], the presence of placenta in the baboon may explain the much higher rate of oxytocin metabolic clearance rate in vivo [27] as compared with the present in vitro study. Thus, the baboon is more similar to other species such as the pregnant rat, rabbit, and sheep that lack circulating forms of oxytocinase [28].…”

“…The blood of pregnant women inactivates oxytocin due to the presence of a circulating enzyme, oxytocinase [6,7], which is a cystine aminopeptidase (CAP). CAP is produced by the placental syncytiotrophoblasts and is secreted into the maternal circulation in increasing amounts with advancing gestational age [8][9][10].…”

“…Literature data on PLAP values during complicated pregnancy are conflicting, both high [2][3][4] and low [1,9,10] values have been reported. Methodological difficulties should to some extent explain this discrepancy.…”
