Plasma-filled diode in the electron accelerator on base of a pulsed linear transformer

Abstract: Technique of a linear transformer allows now to build the generators of high power nanosecond pulses with the current rise time of ∼100 ns without intermediate power compression stages. This technique is being examined for use in high current high voltage pulsed accelerators. Plasma-filled diode has several advantages over standard vacuum diode that allow to improve the accelerators parameters. In this paper, plasma-filled diode experiments are described on generation of e-beam in the linear transformer accele… Show more

“…Interestingly, similar ion pinhole images were observed in pinched-beam diodes (see figure 7 in [76]). The ring-like structures were also observed in the electron beam imprint in a plasma-filled diode [74]. The latter experiment suggests that the circular ion source might be connected with the electron flow at the anode.…”

“…As a result, the design can be simplified considerably, and the size and the cost of the electron accelerator can be reduced. Such an approach was tested in [13]. A plasma-filled diode with a single plasma channel of diameter 1 cm ensured a current of about 100 kA at the low-resistance phase with a rise time up to 150 ns.…”

“…The experiments we had carried out confirmed the possibility of realization of a high-power electron source based on the linear transformer and plasma-filled diode. 4 Maximum output voltage and power were obtained with a plasma channel of a small diameter of ≈10 mm. A plasma gun analogous to the one used in microsecond plasma opening switch [Ref.…”
