Plasma Concentrations of Fibroblast Growth Factors 19 and 21 in Patients with Anorexia Nervosa

Abstract: Circulating levels of FGF21 but not FGF19 are strongly related to body weight and serum levels of leptin, adiponectin, and insulin in both anorectic and normal-weight women. We suggest that reduced plasma FGF21 levels could be involved in the pathophysiology of AN or in a complex adaptive response to this disease.

“…The FGF-21 level was indicated to be associated with several symptoms of metabolic syndrome (Zhang et al, 2008). However, other studies revealed that FGF-21 was positively associated with metabolic disorders, including dyslipidemia, obesity, high plasma glucose level and insulin resistance (Dostalova et al, 2008;Mai et al, 2011;Chavez et al, 2009). The cause of these discrepancies is still unclear.…”

“…The relevance of FGF21 in human metabolism is currently under extensive research activity, and lately FGF21 has been implicated in various clinical conditions including insulin resistance (8,9), NAFLD (8,9,21), mitochondrial diseases (22), anorexia nervosa (23), and as a biomarker predicting type 2 diabetes (24). These apparently heterogenic clinical conditions reflect the fact that the role of FGF21 is poorly characterized in human physiology.…”

“…FGF21 has also significantly correlated with serum levels of leptin, adiponectin, and insulin in both the normal-weight women and the severely underweight patients with AN and significantly reduced after 2 months of realimentation (80). Further clinical studies focused on alterations in circulating levels of FGF21 linked to changes in body weight in both obesity and low weight are necessary.…”
