Copper (Cu)-contaminated soils are becoming more common, and phytoremediation is an effective strategy for reducing the negative effects of Cu on soils. Tree species are commonly used for this technique because they act as a barrier to this type of contamination. It is necessary to evaluate Cu tolerance and toxicity thresholds together with the harm this metal causes to plants. The objective of the current study was to investigate the tolerance of Handroanthus heptaphyllus plants to Cu through morpho-physiological, biochemical, and tissue Cu concentration analyses. H. heptaphyllus seedlings were subjected to nutrient solutions with varying concentrations of copper: 0, 5, 32, 64, 96, and 128 µM Cu in a hydroponic system. We conducted a morpho-physiological trait analysis on shoot height, root length, dry weight, morphological variables of the root system, leaf area, and photosynthetic variables. In addition, we also looked into photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant enzymes, lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide concentration, and Cu accumulation in tissues. The values obtained for variables such as dry weight and pigments did not show significant differences, regardless of Cu concentration. Moreover, photosynthetic and transpiration rates were negatively affected only at the highest Cu concentration (128 µM). Overall, excess Cu had no effect on Handroanthus heptaphyllus below 128 µM. Cu accumulated mainly in the roots without a decrease in biomass, which could indicate the tolerance of the species to this metal as well as its great potential in the phytostabilization of Cu in contaminated soils.

Produkowane przez rośliny metabolity wtórne stanowią bogatą grupę związków, z których wiele wykazuje działanie bioaktywne. Z tego względu są wykorzystywane między innymi w przemyśle farmaceutycznym, kosmetycznym i spożywczym. Problem stanowi niska wydajność pozyskiwania tych związków z roślin rosnących w warunkach naturalnych. Poszukiwane są więc metody stymulacji syntezy metabolitów roślinnych. W ostatnich latach ukazało się szereg artykułów naukowych dotyczących zastosowania metali jako związków stymulujących, tzw. elicytorów. W niniejszej publikacji przedstawiono przykłady zastosowania metali takich jak miedz (Cu), cynk (Zn), kadm (Cd) oraz wybranych nanocząsteczek jako elicytorów stymulujących biosyntezę roślinnych związków bioaktywnych.

Phytoremediation is an eco-friendly and promising strategy for heavy metal (HM) removal from polluted soils. The present study focuses on assessing the potential of faba bean - plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) symbiosis in phytoremediation and soil fertility restoration. Vicia faba L. var. minor was inoculated with efficient and HMs resistant PGPB, and was cultivated in three soil samples differently contaminated by HMs; through the addition of different concentrations of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd).An increase in shoot dry weight (SDW) and nodule dry weight (NDW) was observed after bacterial inoculation mostly in C1 soil. Furthermore, the inoculation effect was marked in the moderately contaminated soil, where a significant increase in shoots Zn, Pb and Cd accumulation (by 56%, 66% and 441, respectively). Likewise, in C1, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd content in plants was more pronounced in inoculated V. faba by 54%, 217%, 179% and 319%, respectively, compared to the non-inoculated. Nevertheless, HMs induced a significant increase in roots antioxidant enzyme such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione reductase (GR) and inoculation further enhancing their activities essentially in C1. Moreover, PGPB considerably reduced Cu and Cd available fractions by 31% and 53%, in C1 and C2, respectively, and increased soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) content, urease and β-glucosidase activities. The obtained results highlight the effectiveness of V. faba- PGPB symbiosis in the reclamation of low and moderately Cu, Cd and Zn contaminated soils. The consortium could be used as biofertilizer to improve soil quality and fertility.
