Plantar Loading During Cutting While Wearing a Rigid Carbon Fiber Insert

Abstract: Context: Stress fractures are one of the most common injuries in sports, accounting for approximately 10% of all overuse injuries. Treatment of fifth metatarsal stress fractures involves both surgical and nonsurgical interventions. Fifth metatarsal stress fractures are difficult to treat because of the risks of delayed union, nonunion, and recurrent injuries. Most of these injuries occur during agility tasks, such as those performed in soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. Objective: To examine the effect of a rigi… Show more

“…Significant differences in forefoot loading have been previously reported based on the footwear worn during both cross and side cutting as well as during jumping and landing. 14,[19][20][21] These studies highlight the importance of considering footwear when determining injury risk patterns in athletic populations.…”

“…12 During running, stiffer shoes are reported to promote altered lower extremity movement strategies, increased ankle joint moments, and overall running economy. 13,14 Increasing midsole stiffness of running shoes has also been shown to redistribute plantar loading and improve performance during jumping 15,16 and cutting 17 tasks. Collectively, these studies justify the alteration of midsole stiffness for isolated foot and ankle pathologies in standard running shoes.…”
