Plant water status, H2O2 scavenging enzymes, ethylene evolution and membrane integrity of Cicer arietinum roots as affected by salinity

Abstract: The chickpea genotype, CSG-8962 was raised in screenhouse to study salinity induced changes in ethylene evolution, antioxidative defence system and membrane integrity in relation to changes in plant water and mineral content. At vegetative stage (60 d after sowing), the plants were exposed to single saline irrigation (0, 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 dS m -1 ). Sampling was done 3 d after saline treatments. The other sets of treated plants were re-irrigated with water and sampled after further 3 d. The Ψ w of leaf and Ψ s… Show more

“…Increased POD activity strengthens the ROS scavenging system and leads to oxidative stress tolerance (Sarowar et al 2005). At present, we found that SOD activity under salt stress was significantly increased, which is consistent with reports in other plants such as mulberry (Harinasut et al 2003), C. arietinum (Kukreja et al 2005), and Lycopersicon esculentum (Gapinska et al 2008) under salt stress. Meanwhile, we found the responses of the two enzymes in plants were consistent with each other under salt stress, which was agreed to the report of Bray and Cockle (1974).…”

“…Increased superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activities in response to water stress were reported (Kukreja et al 2005). The SOD activity which is responsible for scavenging O -2 radical to produce H 2 O 2 (Smirnoff 1993), increased within three days of drought at tillering stage in both drought susceptible and drought tolerant cultivar.…”

“…Vujanovic et al (2006), observed a higher number of colony forming units (CFU g −1 soil) of F. oxysporum colonies in sandy soils. Chickpea crops need deep soils with a sandy loam to clay loam texture and with no salinity problems (Kukreja et al, 2005).…”
