Plant viruses and viroids in Japan

Abstract: An increasing number of plant viruses and viroids have been reported from all over the world due largely to metavirogenomics approaches with technological innovation. Herein, the official changes of virus taxonomy, including the establishment of megataxonomy and amendments of the codes of virus classification and nomenclature, recently made by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses were summarized. The continued efforts of the plant virology community of Japan to index all plant viruses and viroids… Show more

“…CWMV was first reported in wheat in Shandong Province, China, in 1999 and can cause severe disease symptoms (Diao et al ., 1999 ). CWMV has also been detected in the northern areas of Japan (Fuji et al ., 2022 ; Maejima et al ., 2010 ). The optimal temperature for CWMV infection was 15 ± 2 °C (Andika et al ., 2013a ; Yang et al ., 2022 ).…”

“…In general, in order of abundance Martellivirales > Picornavirales > Tolivirales. With the exception of a few species that infect fungi and oomycetes, most species of Martellivirales are plant viruses 25,26 . Picornavirales, RNA viruses infecting eukaryotes, including diatoms, are widespread in the ocean 9,10,27 , with such groups accounting for the vast majority of RNA viruses.…”

“…Transmission of citrus viruses and viroids has been significantly assisted by both mechanical and vegetative methods. Citrus viruses have also been reported to be successfully transmitted through horticulture tools, during grafting, pruning and cutting ( Fuji et al, 2022 ; Hadidi et al, 2022 ).…”
