Among the 18 species included in the Ceiba genus, in the Malvaceae (Bombacoideae) family, Ceiba pentandra L. Gaertn. is not only the tallest and most widespread, but also occupies the most prominent place in Neotropical cosmovisions. In this ethnobotanical review, we compare perceptions and uses of Ceiba and related species across indigenous and Afro-descendant cultures ranging from the Caribbean to the Argentinian Chaco. Ceiba's widely-shared role as axis mundi, (particularly in Amazonia) psychopomp and shelter of major forest spirits makes it a perfect example of a Spiritual Keystone Species, a new concept inspired from Cultural Keystone Species and defined here for the first time.

Virola is the largest genus of Myristicaceae in America, comprising about 60 species of medium-sized trees geographically spread from Mexico to southern Brazil. The plant species of this genus have been widely used in folk medicine for the treatment of several ailments, such as rheumatic pain, bronchial asthma, tumors in the joints, intestinal worms, halitosis, ulcers, and multiple infections, due to their pharmacological activity. This review presents an updated and comprehensive summary of Virola species, particularly their ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry, and biological activity, to support the safe medicinal use of plant extracts and provide guidance for future research. The Virola spp.’s ethnopharmacology, including in the treatment of stomach pain and gastric ulcers, as well as antimicrobial and tryponosomicidal activities, is attributable to the presence of a myriad of phytoconstituents, such as flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, lignans, arylalkanones, and sitosterol. Hence, such species yield potential leads or molecular scaffolds for the development of new pharmaceutical formulations, encouraging the elucidation of not-yet-understood action mechanisms and ascertaining their safety for humans.

Objetivo: Avaliar in vitro a ação antimicrobiana do extrato hidroalcóolico da folha de Spondias mombin (cajá), sobre Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) e Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212). Metodologia: As linhagens microbianas foram cultivadas em caldo BHI (Brain Heart Infusion) e incubadas a 37 °C por 18-20 horas. Em placas de petri contendo Agar Mueller Hinton foi introduzida solução salina inoculada com cada crescimento microbiano e confeccionados cinco orifícios padronizados de aproximadamente seis mm de diâmetro. Foram introduzidos 50µL da substância teste (Extrato Bruto- EB/Substância Pura - SP até a diluição 1:512) nos orifícios e incubadas a 37°C por 24 horas. O ensaio foi realizado em duplicata sobre cada linhagem. Utilizou-se como controles positivos o digluconato de clorexidina a 2% e o hipoclorito de sódio 2,5%. Para análise dos dados utilizou-se parâmetros estatísticos que incluíram valores: mínimo, máximo, média e desvio padrão. Aplicou-se o teste não paramétrico U de Mann-Whitney na comparação da concentração inibitória mínima das substâncias. Resultados: Observou-se que a clorexidina e o extrato do cajá mostraram desempenho superior ao hipoclorito de sódio 2,5% sobre as bactérias testadas. Conforme resultados do teste U de Mann Whitney observou-se estatisticamente significante apenas entre o extrato do cajá e o hipoclorito de sódio 2,5% (p< 0,05). Conclusões: Conclui-se que o extrato da folha de S. mombin apresentou atividade inibitória sobre crescimento planctônico de S. aureus e E. faecalis, estimulando a pesquisa para tratamento de infecções endodônticas persistentes através de produtos bioativos.
