Plant Sterols and Risk of Stomach Cancer: A Case-Control Study in Uruguay

Abstract: In 1997-1999, 120 incident and histologically verified cases of stomach cancer were frequency matched on age, gender, residence, and urban/rural status with 360 controls to study the role of diet in gastric cancer in Uruguay. We focused on the role of plant sterols (beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, and total plant sterols) after controlling for major confounders. Total phytosterols were associated with a strong inverse relationship with stomach cancer (odds ratio of stomach cancer for total phytoste… Show more

“…Only two epidemiological studies on plant sterols and cancer have been performed. In the first study, Mendilaharsu and colleagues (30) reported a protective effect of phytosterols in lung cancer, whereas a similar effect was observed in gastric cancer (31). It has been suggested that plant sterols could induce decreased cell growth and apoptosis through ceramide production (32)(33)(34).…”

“…Phytosterols were also found to be protective to ulcers [104] and to have antifungal activity [105]. The intake of phytosterols is beneficial to prevent or treat many different types of cancer, inlcuding breast [106], prostate [107 -108], lung [109], esophagus [110], stomach [111], endometrial [112], and ovary [113].…”
