Plant Resources, 13C-NMR Spectral Characteristic and Pharmacological Activities of Dammarane-Type Triterpenoids

Abstract: Dammarane-type triterpenoids (DTT) widely distribute in various medicinal plants. They have generated a great amount of interest in the field of new drug research and development. Generally, DTT are the main bioactive ingredients abundant in Araliaceae plants, such as Panax ginseng, P. japonicas, P. notoginseng, and P. quinquefolium. Aside from Araliaceae, DTT also distribute in other families, including Betulaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Meliaceae, Rhamnaceae, and Scrophulariaceae. Until now, about 136 species belong… Show more

“…Dammarane-type triterpenoids are tetracyclic triterpenoids whose structural feature is characterized by a 6/6/6/5 ring system with H-5α, H-9α, H-13β, three β-CH 3 groups on C-4 (CH 3 -28), C-8 (CH 3 -20), C-10 (CH 3 -19), one α-CH 3 group on C-14 (CH 3 -30), C-17β-side chain, and 20 R or S configuration ( Figure 16 ) [ 71 ]. These compounds are widely distributed in various plant families such as Araliaceae ( Aralia sp., Panax sp., Polyscias sp.…”

“…Dammarane-type triterpenes belong to the class of tetracyclic triterpenes; they represent a wide range of compositions spread in a variety of plant families such as Arialiaceae, Betulacease, Meliaceae, etc. [98]. Their basic structure is represented in Figure 8.…”

“…In Chinese traditional medicine, the roots of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer (ginseng) (Araliaceae), known locally as "renshen", are used as a complementary and alternative herbal supplement to support cancer chemotherapy [76]. The ginsenosides, containing mainly dammarane-type tetracyclic triterpene saponins, have been characterized as the major components of ginseng, and have attracted a great deal of attention owing to their promising bioactivities, including potential antitumor efficacy [77,78].…”

“…In analogous work, the antitumor potential has been investigated extensively for the PPD-type ginseng saponins, including the 20(S)-ginsenosides Rh 2 (G-Rh2, 30) and Rg 3 (G-Rg3, 31), and ginsenosides Rh 3 (G-Rh3, 32), and Rk 2 (G-Rk2, 33) (▶ Fig. 6) [76,78,79,96]. Of these, G-Rh2 (30) was up to 10-fold more active than G-Rg3 (31) toward a panel of human cancer cells [79], indicating that introducing an additional sugar unit in the C-3 saccharide moiety decreases the cytotoxic potency of G-Rh2 (30).…”
