Plant Pleiotropic Drug Resistance Transporters: Transport Mechanism, Gene Expression, and Function

Abstract: Pleiotropic drug resistance (PDR) transporters belonging to the ABCG subfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are identified only in fungi and plants. Members of this family are expressed in plants in response to various biotic and abiotic stresses and transport a diverse array of molecules across membranes. Although their detailed transport mechanism is largely unknown, they play important roles in detoxification processes, preventing water loss, transport of phytohormones, and secondary metabolit… Show more

“…Regarding other heavy metals, some plant full-size ABCG (PDR) transporters confer cadmium and lead tolerance (38)(39)(40). Therefore, this work presents the first description of the role of an ABCG transporter in the resistance of Leishmania to Sb III and As III .…”

“…OsPDR9 ( Os01g0609300 ) encodes one of the 23 pleiotropic drug resistance (PDR)-like ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters in rice [93]. Plant PDR-like ABC transporters are expressed in response to various biotic and abiotic stresses and transport a diverse array of molecules across membranes [94]. OsPDR9 was reported to be induced by jasmonic acid, heavy metals, high salt, hypoxic stress and redox perturbations, suggesting its role in stress responses [95] (Table 1).…”

“…In addition to MRP, other ABC transporters have been shown to be involved in the transport of plant secondary metabolites, such as PDR transporter (Schulz and Kolukisaglu 2006;Crouzet et al 2013;Nuruzzaman et al 2014). In fact, an ABC transporter of Arabidopsis PDR12 (AtPDR12)/ ABCG40 has been reported to be a plasma-membrane ABAuptake transporter in guard cells and other types of plant cells.…”

“…Based on structural features, these ABC transporters have been divided into several subfamilies including full size and half size transporters. However, three ABC proteins are known to be responsible for chemoresistance: pleiotropic drug resistance (PDR, or ABCG), multidrug resistance (P-glycoprotein/MDR, or ABCB), and multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP, or ABCC) (Litman et al 2001;Nuruzzaman et al 2014).…”
