Plant natural products: from traditional compounds to new emerging drugs in cancer therapy

Abstract: Natural products are chemical compounds or substances produced naturally by living organisms. With the development of modern technology, more and more plant extracts have been found to be useful to medical practice. Both micromolecules and macromolecules have been reported to have the ability to inhibit tumour progression, a novel weapon to fight cancer by targeting its 10 characteristic hallmarks. In this review, we focus on summarizing plant natural compounds and their derivatives with anti-tumour properties… Show more

“…However, alkaloids have long been existed before humans; some of them are structurally similar to neurotransmitters present in the central nervous system of humans. Considering the medicinal importance of alkaloids and research explaining their role in treating wild propagation of cells, they would be used as an effective chemopreventive agent in the era of modern drug innovation (63,64). Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, betalain alkaloids, diterpenoid alkaloids, indole alkaloids, isoquinoline alkaloids, lycopodium alkaloids, monoterpene and sesquiterpene alkaloids, peptide alkaloids, pyrrolidine and piperidine alkaloids, pyrrolizidine alkaloids, quinoline alkaloids, quinolizidine alkaloids, steroidal alkaloids, tropane alkaloids, and miscellaneous alkaloids are the main categories of Alkaloids.…”

“…To date, many of the anticancer agents currently used in cancer therapies have been developed from natural products such as plants (vincristine, vinblastine, etoposide, paclitaxel, camptothecin, topotecan, and irinotecan), marine organisms (cytarabine), and microorganisms (dactinomycin, bleomycin, and doxorubicin) [57] . MiRNAs are being considered as attractive targets for cancer prevention and therapy due to their oncogenic or tumor suppressor activities [58] ( Table 1).…”

“…3 Cancer is one of the most deadly types of disease and evasion from apoptosis and unstoppable cell proliferation are accepted as its distinctive features. 4 Prostate and lung cancer which are the most common cancer types and are the leading cause of cancer related death worldwide. 4,5 Chemotherapy is frequently used against these cancers but, the major deficiencies of chemotherapeutic agents are systemic toxicity and drug resistance over time.…”

To solve these problems, scientific community enter new search for exploration of efficient chemotherapeutics and natural products are accepted as novel candidate for development new chemotherapeutics due their high anticancer activity and less toxicity in normal cells.…”
