Plant growth promotion traits of phosphobacteria isolated from Puna, Argentina

Abstract: The ability of soil microorganisms to solubilize phosphate is an important trait of plant growth-promoting bacteria leading to increased yields and smaller use of fertilizers. This study presents the isolation and characterization of phosphobacteria from Puna, northwestern Argentina and the ability to produce phosphate solubilization, alkaline phosphatase, siderophores, and indole acetic acid. The P-solubilizing activity was coincidental with a decrease in pH values of the tricalcium phosphate medium for all s… Show more

“…Por su parte, cada una contribuye a la mineralización y solubilización de P del co-cultivo mediante el aporte aditivo de enzimas fosfatasas y ácidos orgánicos que solubilizan el P inorgánico (30,31). En este contexto, el desarrollo de este co-cultivo, se constituye en una herramienta biotecnológica de aplicación útil, puesto que su uso podría maximizar y potenciar la disponibilidad del P en el suelo mediante dos procesos desarrollados en un solo producto, el cual es elaborado a bajo costo.…”

“…In the present study, 31 PSB strains were isolated and two of these efficient PSB strains (P. agglomerans PSB-1 and B. anthina PSB-2) were selected for further studies; they had a marked insoluble phosphate solubilizing ability as visualized by the clear zone developed around the colonies. Previous reports also described some Burkholderia and Pantoea strains as being efficient phosphate solubilizers (Peix et al, 2001;Caballero-Mellado et al, 2007;Torres et al, 2008;Viruel et al, 2011;Khalimi et al, 2012;Silini-Cherif et al, 2012). Titratable acidity is the total H + concentration which can be produced by different compounds (Whitelaw et al, 1999).…”

“…The percent increases in root and shoot dry weights induced by Azotobacter sp., respectively were 67.7 % and 64.8 % compared with uninoculated control. This promotive effect could be attributed to the potential of PSB to increase the availability of nutrients, such as phosphorus and phytohormone production [31]. Additionally, PSB protect plant from phytopathogens through the production of antibiotics, HCN, phenazines and anti-fungal metabolites [32], [33].…”
